Stitching Ourselves Back Together

Learn how mindful handcrafting can benefit wellbeing

This 4-week online course is an invitation to explore how hands on work can bring us emotional balance, ease frustration, anxiety and stress, and release feel-good hormones in our brains

With needle and thread we honour the practices of our foremothers, valuing the cloth, being mindful and humble

Through stitching, reflection, and connection, we’ll transform tears and scars into something beautiful and meaningful, bringing a sense of pride, grounding, and belonging that extends beyond the cloth

Who it's for:

This course is for folk who seek a mindful, fulfilling way to calm their nervous system.

It’s for those who long to come home to their roots and themselves, bring awareness and creativity into our wardrobe and homes, with needle, thread and well-loved fabrics.

"I like that this course made us come out of our comfort zone. It gave us motivation and reasons to mend cloth and guides how to repair them. I appreciate especially videos with sewing difficult part of clothes. I do not enjoy shopping for new ones especially when we can repair it. It came just at the time I needed it. I like the energy of the course also. It gave me push to try different ways to stitch, not to be all the time the same. Make from boring cloth some awesome piece. To accept the challenge. It gave me reasons to appreciate fabric, work and the whole journey of the cloth to our home. It changed my way to look at my wardrobe. I will appreciate it much more now."

Hi, I'm Julieta!

I’ve always been a creative person and have been making handcrafts for as long as I can remember, starting with making dolls clothes as a child. I made my first piece of clothing for myself at school when I was 11, and started to design and make, adjust or adorn, almost everything in my wardrobe when I was about 14.

In my 20’s I started getting into environmental activism and also went to a school of art and creativity where I learnt a little bit of lots of things.

More recently I spent 14 years as a nomadic full-time crafter, working with macramé, mandalas, sewing, and lots more. Travelling alone can be stressful, and during that time, I realized how powerful handcrafts can be for calming the mind. Making things with my hands helped me feel grounded, relaxed, connected and present whenever I was anxious, frustrated, or worried. I learned the value of slowing down, being mindful and creative.

This course is a reflection of the path I’ve walked and an invitation to slow down, and let our hands guide us back to balance, connection, creativity and belonging.

Questions?

Is this course suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! There are tutorials right from choosing which needle and thread to use and how to thread your needle.

What materials and tools will I need?

A sewing and/or embroidery needle, sewing thread, embroidery thread, a pair of scissors that can cut fabric and some fabric scraps. We'll be working with clothes you already have, with the option to use other used clothing. In the first lesson you'll learn about choosing needles, threads and optional extras and we'll put together a small sewing kit. You'll also need a journal or another way to take notes, preferably on paper.

Is this course suitable for more experienced sewers?

Yes! You may find the tutorials quite basic but I encourage everyone to challenge themselves no matter what level they're at, and the calm that stitching brings happens even if you're doing something you've done before. Plus there's extra information designed to inspire and motivate you to mend and upcycle even more.

How long will I have access to the course?

It's designed as a 4 week course, but you'll have access for 6 months to give you plenty of time to finish it.
